Please remember that “land back” does not mean “indigenous people are mystical elves with innate epigenetic wisdom of land stewardship and they don’t belong in big cities,” nor does it mean “non-indigenous people can’t be farmers.”
What it DOES mean is that “non-indigenous farmers should be paying the equivalent of property taxes to the native governments their land was stolen from.”
It means, “there’s a great deal of indigenous scholarship on sustainable agricultural practices that farmers should be taking into account, because indigenous agriculture was more advanced than European agriculture at the time Europe invaded the Americas and western agriculture *still* hasn’t caught up in terms of figuring out how to produce equivalently high crop yields without compromising the ecosystem.”
It means, “non-indigenous farmers should be in an intellectual discourse with indigenous agricultural scientists and indigenous peoples that still do traditional farming, figuring how to repair the damage western farming practices have done to the ecosystem.”
It also means that indigenous peoples should regain the right to sustain themselves on the land according to the practices they want, and they should have free reign to perform their cultural practices and protect their holy sites, as opposed to the current model where if they try to honor their dead on public lands they get violently removed.
What kinda pisses me off about that architecture in Africa Twitter thread is that it primarily focuses on European definitions of what “good” architecture is—permanent, typically stone based designed structures that fit a specific sort of aesthetic that can be deemed such. The Somalia section of it in specific is just Italian colonial architecture that has nothing to do with ethnic Somalis but instead an architecture style that was introduced by an imperial force that hardly considered them humans. As to how Somali tent making, which is traditionally very complicated, is not seen as a form of architecture worth talking about is beyond me. I mean even the Smithsonian has a replica of a Somali tent home:
How is this not architecture! It’s a dwelling! It has a planned structure and yes it’s mobile, and yes it can be taken apart when need be but it’s still architecture even if not in the traditional sense. It’s still a complex and designed structure, this isn’t just some random thing people do. And this tent could’ve been used for the majority of someone’s lifetime and yet have been all around the easternmost part of the Horn of Africa along with them. This specific type of dwelling in itself isn’t just Somali but it’s shared by pastoralists going into even Southeast Africa (primarily those speaking Khoe languages) so when we do this whole national architecture thing in Africa we’re both ignoring the various facets and diversity of architecture multiple different ethnic groups have but also the shared history of some constructions that span far beyond drawn up borders.
It’s like people only talk about Africa having anything noteworthy if it’s being used to counter Westerners with parameters of success and worth that they themselves imposed—and it’s done in the dumbest fashion possible.
Did I just employ the “Treat Them Like You are A Kindergarten Teacher Again” method with my insurance company today? I surely did. Did it work? Probably better than intended because I made an actual doctor feel contrite.
So, my insurance has been trying to not cover my SNRI because it is new on the market and no generic available yet, so pricey.
I apply for a refill and the request gets locked for review. Again. For the 3rd time.
This time I call and immediately ask to speak to the actual doctor making these clinical decisions. Very politely. Must be a slow day because they allow it.
ME: [Teacher voice] I’m calling in regards to the SNRI you have placed a lock on. Why was this decision made?
DOC: Well, there are dozens of other medications on the market in that tier, and far cheaper for you and [insurer]. We have sent a request to your doctor to consider alternatives.
ME: I am aware of that. So, can you do me a HUGE favor and look up my prescription history really quickly and tell me how many SSRIs and SNRIs were only filled once in 2022 for me, showing they were poorly tolerated?
DOC: It looks like eight.
ME: Great job! Now, can you please look at my genetic test for psychiatric drug tolerance and tell me how many medications are listed in the safe category?
DOC: Two.
ME: Awesome! Now, can you tell me what type that other drug is that I’m not taking?
DOC: Yeah, totally, it’s an MAOI.
ME: That’s correct, you’re really knowledgeable! Should I be taking something as dangerous as an MAOI with my other medications, or even just in general?
DOC: It’s contraindicated for sure.
ME: It is! So true! So, last question since you’ve been incredibly smart and helpful. Is it less expensive for [insurer] to pay out for the medication knowing they already get a huge manufacturer discount anyway, or is it more expensive for them to pay for me to need potentially long-term inpatient psychiatric care?
DOC: I’ll clear the code, ma'am and flag it as medically necessary. I’m sorry about this.
ME: I appreciate you SO MUCH. You have a great day now.

We have GOT to stop being assholes to people with receding and balding hairlines. There’s not a single person that it can’t affect. It affects trans men, particularly on hormones, it affects trans women, particularly those not on hormones, it affects people with endocrine issues, something that’s becoming more prevalent and common, and it can affect people without a particular cause, including cis women. It’s a normal part of being human and we NEED to stop dehumanizing and humiliating ppl for it
My bf started losing his hair in his early 20s and the effect it’s had on him is devastating.
He’s an actor and he was dropped by his agent after he stopped hiding his hair loss. The roles he was cast in narrowed and shifted from more heroic characters to villains, and eventually he became so miserable about it that he stopped going to auditions altogether.
He used to enjoy dyeing his hair bright colours, and he lost that means of self expression. It alienated him from his own appearance, which knocked him back in coming out and exploring his queerness. The way he talks about it often feels dysmorphic. He says shaving makes him feel like he’s “rotting” - like he’s “scraping the mold off [his] head”.
I’ve seen drunk people and teenagers yell at him in the street and mock his baldness. I’ve seen people come up to him and slap his head or touch it without asking for permission. I’ve witnessed this behaviour from other trans people and women who I know would absolutely kick off if he took such a degrading or entitled attitude towards a part of their body, but seem to think it’s OK to do it to him.
Since going bald people perceive him as more masculine. He feels people are more suspicious of him. Women are less likely to approach him. Folks are quicker to put him in a box or misread his behaviour as aggressive or threatening, when the reality is that he’s neurodivergent and can’t conform to rigid social norms.
Baldness is a heavily gendered characteristic. If someone is conventionally masculine enough and/or is protected by other intersecting powers and privileges (eg wealth) then baldness can reinforce their maleness and the harm to their social standing is minimised. But if their performance of maleness is complicated by something like queerness or disability, it creates a dissonance. They have what is perceived as a hypermasculine trait standing in sharp contrast with their refusal/failure to perform normative, idealised masculinity.
And that’s how baldness is typically read - as failure. Especially when it exists outside of wealthy, successful, heterosexual masculinity but tbh even there too - just look at all the jokes about Jeff Bezos’ baldness or Elon Musk getting hair plugs. It’s similar to insulting Trump over his weight. Like yeah fuck those guys but all you’re really doing is revealing to the fat and bald people in your life that you think their bodies are deserving of mockery.
And God help you if you’re a bald woman. All women with receding hairlines are at a huge risk from transmisogyny.
Sorry for the essay. Baldness is absolutely a body neutrality issue. It’s an ageism issue, and a trans issue, and I WISH there was a broader recognition of this.
